What Should Your Future Look Like

It is amazing how many people have absolutely no idea what they want out of life. Particularly as people approach middle age, there is a tendency to experience a growing sense of dissatisfaction with one's life, career, and an overall sense of general disappointment. People often feel as though they are on a treadmill, working hard but not really getting anywhere.

One of the main reasons for this is that people never really ask themselves what their future should look like. Without a clear, concise, and well defined vision of the future it becomes very difficult to control how one's life unfolds. Just as it's fruitless to go on a long journey without a destination in mind, a person's journey into the future needs to have a destination as well. Of course some people find enjoyment in meandering about the countryside without a destination in mind-they just want to enjoy the trip. Many people live their lives using the same approach, but after awhile lose the enjoyment.

Living your life in this manner, far from being exciting and fulfilling, often leads to the discontent and restlessness that many of us feel in middle age. This is not a hard or difficult situation to overcome-it is simply a matter of asking yourself the right questions. These questions are also the key taking back control of your future.

The very first thing you should ask yourself is what do you really want from life. If the answer to that question is unclear or ambiguous, you can ask it in different ways. For example you can ask yourself what is important to you. You might also rephrase it as what do you enjoy, or what are you good at. As you begin to explore your values and the things that you find most important in life, creating a roadmap to the future will become easier. When you have a solid understanding of these factors, your roadmap will become almost self evident.

Conversely, if you are uncertain about what you want from life, it is virtually assured that you will not obtain it. Only by getting clear on what it is that you expect and want will you have any reasonable chance of achieving it. This process of creating your expected vision for the future is critical to both your long-term fulfillment and your short-term happiness. Spend some time with yourself to identify what is important and what you really want. Once you've done this, you will also be able to define what your future should look like.
